The Narrow Streets
2025 · Quiapo & Binondo, Manila, Philippines · 8 photographs
I spent several days in 2025 walking the streets of Quiapo and Binondo with my camera. These two old districts sit right across the river from each other, but each carries its own distinct rhythm. Quiapo moves around the church, Muslim Town, and market stalls selling everything from fresh herbs to motorcycle parts. Just across the bridge, Binondo shifts into narrow commercial alleys lined with pastry shops, tea houses, and wholesale hardware counters.
Most of these photos came from wandering without a strict route. In Carriedo, a stray dog stopped in front of two breakfast carts while vendors sat on the shop steps waiting for the morning crowd. Further down toward Muslim Town, three women stood by a blue electric tricycle to talk after shopping, their patterned dresses catching the afternoon sun. Across the bridge in Chinatown, a cart vendor watched the street from behind a stack of yellow metal crates.
Walking these blocks requires patience and small steps. You find Catholic devotional statues sharing window space with Chinese New Year greetings, delivery drivers catching their breath on plastic stools, and market vendors working under plastic sheets strung up against the sun. These frames document normal days in two neighborhoods that have spent centuries living shoulder to shoulder.
